Hello,

My name is Caroline Mateo. I am currently taking Fiction Writing for Spring 2019 and enjoying it every step of the way. This class is mainly about figuring out and developing your creative writing skills, while being exposed to international writers. For this semester, I have worked on two different fiction pieces, an in-class essay and introduced Sandra Cisneros’ Woman Hollering Creek.

My goals for the fiction pieces were to move my readers to feel what my characters were feeling and elicit a response towards the perspective that was given to them. It is easy to comment on a person’s actions from a distance, but once you’re in that position it isn’t what you thought it would be. Which is why I wanted to give people a reason to look into my stories and try some shoes on.

Did I fail? I don’t think so. For my story Frosted Flakes, that was presented to the class for feedback, many people understood the extent of his annoyed attitude and what led him to his final decision. As for HENRY, I think that I was able to sufficiently describe what Jessica was going through during a difficult time in her life. Although, I felt it was more of a challenge because I have never known someone who such an extensive mental illness, so I should have done a bit more research.

I hope to retain the information that I have learned in this class and transfer it into my future stories, creative writing pieces, and classes. After this semester, I have a year and a half left until I finish my bachelors degree and then I’m headed to get my MFA in Creative Writing to potentially become an English professor.
